  • Judge #12- When choice interrupts the rehearsed movements of instinct, a songbird feels the rush of anxiety and possibility. Not only is McEntee’s portrayal of such human concerns through the life of a songbird inventive, but her impossible play of words instantly enchants the reader into the world of her creation.

  • This is a beguiling piece, as told through the songbird’s POV. The writer had me at “in a place between somewhere and somewhere else.” There are superb sentences and phrases throughout, such as “It was simply the way of life: one action followed the next.” The multiple Brees are powerful. This writer is in confident command of the language and her story. To mimic a description of Bree’s feathers, the story is graceful and majestic.
