Description: Oil on Canvas (30x40). A friend showed me some Photos he took of his safari trip to Kenya. I decided to use a particularly striking one as reference to the painting I am submitting.
Judge #2- I love the simplicity and emotional impact of this piece. I always think that it is difficult to express a range of emotions in landscapes the way that Edward Hopper does. In this work we are awed by the vastness, loneliness, and also by the beauty of the setting. Generally, it is a mistake to plop a tree in the middle of a painting but it works here with great effectiveness, accenting the loneliness and drawing the viewer in. The light filtering through the clouds is masterfully done. It would be a bleak scene except for the blue sky that might be coming in.
